Opportunities for Jimmy Buffett fans to see the singer/songwriter’s musical Escape to Margaritaville on Broadway are wasting away: The production will stage its final performance July 1.
According to Playbill.com, Escape to Margaritaville, which officially opened March 15 at the Marquis Theatre in New York City, will have played 29 previews and 124 regular performances at the venue when the cast takes its final bow.
Escape to Margaritaville premiered at California’s La Jolla Playhouse, then moved on to Houston, New Orleans, and Chicago before coming to Broadway. You still have a chance to see it, though — a national tour of the production is planned, kicking off in October 2019 in Providence, Rhode Island. In addition, Buffett and the musical’s cast will be performing July 4 at the 2018 edition of the A Capitol Fourth special, which will air live from Washington, D.C., on PBS.
Escape to Margaritaville is a musical comedy that features both classic and new Buffett compositions and tells the story of a part-time bartender and part-time singer at a Caribbean resort who falls for a beautiful career-minded vacationer.
The production is directed by Christopher Ashley, who won a Tony Award last year for Come from Away, with a book by Greg Garcia and Mike O’Malley, both of whom worked on the popular TV series My Name Is Earl.
Among the well-known Buffett tunes featured in the show are “Son of a Son of a Sailor,” “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and, of course, “Margaritaville.”
